NNI Workshop Reports

This is the workshop report for the 2003 RSL Workshop, which took place Sept. 30-Oct. 1, 2003 at the Department of Commerce in Washington, DC. 

This document is the report of the NNI Workshop on Public Participation in Nanotechnology held in May
2006. The workshop was sponsored by the NSET Subcommittee and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
as part of long-range planning efforts for the NNI, guided by thoughtful concern for the opinions and benefit
of the American people. The recommendations of the public participation workshop provided guidance to
the NSET Subcommittee and its Nanotechnology Public Engagement and Communications (NPEC) Working

These four reports are the result of a series of workshops focusing on various issues in the nanotechnology environmental, health, and safety (EHS) arena. The "nanoEHS" workshop series was a part of an ongoing strategy to coordinate nanotechnology-related EHS research by convening experts from industry, academia, and the Federal Government to share the latest information and newest developments, to discuss the current state-of-the-science, and to identify research gaps in the nanotechnology-related EHS field.

 This document is the report of a workshop held July 13–14, 2010. The goal of this workshop was to obtain input from stakeholders—both those new to nanoscale science, engineering, and technology and those already familiar with these fields and with the NNI—regarding the goals and objectives of an updated NNI Strategic Plan that was under development at the time of the workshop. This report was designed, assembled, and edited by NNCO staff.

This report on Regional, State, and Local (RSL) Initiatives in Nanotechnology is the result of a topical workshop convened 1–3 April 2009 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, by the Nanoscale Science, Engineering, and Technology (NSET) Subcommittee of the National Science and Technology Council’s Committee on Technology.

Report of a workshop seeking research community input on NNI research at the intersection of nanoscale science and technology and biology, held October 9-11, 2003.

This NNI report includes a particular focus on biomedical applications of nanotechnology.  The meeting was jointly sponsored by the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health and—through the National Nanotechnology Coordination Office – other member agencies of the Nanoscale Science, Engineering, and Technology (NSET) Subcommittee.

Report on an NNI workshop seeking research community input regarding capabilities needed for instrumentation and metrology for nanotechnology, held  January 27-29, 2004.

An NNI workshop report examining trends/opportunities in nanoscale science and engineering for electronic, photonic and magnetic technologies, held February 11-13, 2004.

Report on research community input for agenda related to an original NNI “grand challenge” topic: “Nanostructured Materials by Design,” June 11-13, 2003.

Workshop findings were used to formulate the 2004 NNI Strategic Plan, particularly the Nanomaterials Program Component Area described in that plan.  Meeting was jointly sponsored by the National Science Foundation (in particular the Division of Materials Research) and, through the National Nanotechnology Coordination Office, other member agencies of the Nanoscale Science, Engineering, and Technology (NSET) Subcommittee.

Intended to provide direction to researchers and program managers involved in nanomanufacturing R&D regarding long-term goals and research opportunities.  This NNI workshop report identifies then-current scientific and technological advances, the research needs and goals for four generations of nanomanufactured products, the required scientific and technological infrastructure, the investment and implementation strategies for future nanomanufacturing R&D, and the relevant challenge areas and priorities for the following decade.
