NNI Budget

The President’s 2014 Budget provides over $1.7 billion for the National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI), a sustained investment in support of the President’s priorities and innovation strategy. Cumulatively totaling almost $20 billion since the inception of the NNI in 2001 (including the 2014 request), this support reflects nanotechnology’s potential to significantly improve our fundamental understanding and control of matter at the nanoscale and to translate that knowledge into solutions to critical national issues.

This document is a supplement to the President’s 2012 Budget Request submitted to Congress in February of 2011. It gives a description of the activities underway in 2010 and 2011 and planned for 2012 by the Federal Government agencies participating in the National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI), primarily from a programmatic and budgetary perspective.

Looks at continued long-term growth in Federal nanotechnology research and development investments.  Notes that a substantial portion of funding increases for FY 2008 would be within agencies under the American Competitiveness Initiative – the National Science Foundation (NSF), Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science, and National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

Details how a sustained major investment in nanotechnology research and development across the previous nine years of the National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI) reflected broad support for the program from the Administration and Congress, based on its potential to vastly improve the nation’s fundamental understanding and control of matter, ultimately leading to a revolution in technology and industry for the benefit of society.

The NSET Subcommittee succeeded the Interagency Working Group on Nanoscience, Engineering, and Technology (IWGN) as the primary interagency coordination mechanism on nanotechnology. The NNI Implementation Plan looks at ways nanotechnology thrives from modern advances in chemistry, physics, biology, engineering, medical, and materials research and how it would contribute to cross-disciplinary training of the 21st century science and technology workforce. Reflects the FY 2001 budget for relevant programs which then was being increased to $495 million.
