Winner Announced for the First NNI Nanotechnology Student Video Contest

The National Nanotechnology Coordination Office (NNCO) is pleased to announce the winners of the first Tiny Science. Big Impacts. Cool Videos. nanotechnology video contest for students. Abelardo Colon and Jennifer Gill from the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras, Nanoscience and Nanotechnology Research Lab won the top honors for their video entitled Chlorination-less. The video explains a new method for disinfecting drinking water using a nanodiamond powder.

What: A workshop sponsored by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and co-hosted by the National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI) entitled “Quantifying Exposure to Engineered Nanomaterials from Manufactured Products – Addressing Environmental, Health, and Safety Implications.” This is a technical workshop to determine the state of the science and the tools and methods available to characterize and quantify exposure to engineered nanomaterials from consumer products.

Winner Announced for NNI’s First ‘EnvisioNano’ Nanotechnology Image Contest

The National Nanotechnology Coordination Office (NNCO) is pleased to announce the winner of the first EnvisioNano nanotechnology image contest for students. Kyle Nowlin from the University of North Carolina Greensboro Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering won the top honors for his image entitled Polymer Nanocone Array. The image, shown below, explores new ways of controlling the spread of bacteria and fungi through the use of nanostructured surfaces (NSS).

USDA Awards $3.8 Million in Grants for Nanotechnology Research

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) today announced more than $3.8 million in funding to support grants focused on using nanotechnology to find solutions to societal challenges such as food security, nutrition, food safety, and environmental protection. The awards were made through NIFA’s Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI), which is authorized by the 2014 Farm Bill.

Outcomes of the 2015 EU-U.S.: Bridging NanoEHS Research Efforts joint workshop

On March 12-13, 2015, the United States and the European Union held their fourth joint workshop on Bridging NanoEHS Research Efforts to further promote and deepen the collaboration on nanotechnology environmental, health, and safety (nanoEHS or nanosafety) research. The workshop brought together the U.S.-EU Communities of Research (CORs), launched by the European Commission and the United States in 2012.
